EN 099

Basic English Competence

Course Description

This course is designed to develop the skills needed for EN 101-102. These include increasing vocabulary and developing proficiency in reading and writing skills. Students must attain a grade of C+ or higher to be recommended for enrollment in EN 101.

This course is not a substitute for either EN 101 OR en 102.

No degree credit is granted for developmental courses, including EN 099.

Models for Writers: Short Essays for Composition, Rosa and Eschholz

American Heritage Dictionary (3rd edition)

bilingual (dual-language) dictionary (English/student’s native tongue)

Teaching Procedures

Class discussions and handbook exercises will complement paper writing assignments. Readings will serve to broaden the student’s general knowledge, develop the student’s active and passive vocabulary, spelling, and analytical skills, and provide her or him with a sharpened sense of effective English-language writing style through immersion in the target language.

Instructional Objectives

To communicate clearly and effectively; to think critically and solve problems; to access information; to work independently; to commit to lifelong learning; the appreciate cultural diversity; to recognize and resolve ethical issues; and to respond to challenges.

Student Learning Outcomes

The student who successfully completes this course will be able to: structure a paper; develop paragraphs; write clear sentences; use subordination; avoid fragments and run-ons; identify basic spelling patterns; build vocabulary; use a dictionary effectively; paraphrase; compare and contrast; write fluently; write persuasively; write critically; read fluently; read analytically; and edit and proof read.

Grading and Attendance*

Student grades will be based on the following: in-class reading and writing exercises; 2 Pass/Fail papers and 10 letter graded paper assignments submitted typed or word-processed in final draft; active participation in class and regular attendance. Students are expected to conduct themselves as dedicated adult-learners: Lateness is unacceptable. Talking out of turn in class in unacceptable. Academic dishonesty (i.e., cheating and plagiarism)  are not permitted, and are grounds for immediate dismissal from the course with a grade of F.

*Note:

  • You must do YOUR OWN WORK AT ALL TIMES
  • You must write  rough (first draft) of each paper and hand that in with your final draft
  • You must hand in two copies of the final draft of each paper
  • All take-home assignments must be completed and turned in on time
  • You are permitted two absences. You will receive a grade of F upon a fourth absence.
  • It is your responsibility to know and follow all regulations. Ignorance of the rules is not a pardonable excuse.

*The two practice papers (1 & 11) will be graded strictly on a Pass/Fail basis. Of the remaining 13 papers, I will drop the lowest three grades. However, failure to hand in a paper on time will result in an indelible grade of F (i.e., a grade of F by default will NOT be dropped.) No rewrites will be accepted.
